Hartland is subdivisions rather than waterfront. No lake putting humidity against the walls and not much heavy tree cover, so what grows here is ordinary — algae on the shaded side, moss on the hardscape, the slow kind that creeps up on a house over a few seasons.
Two things shape the work. The houses are mostly two stories and up, which puts the dirtiest part of the wall well past where anyone is getting with a hose. And there is a lot of stone — walls, steps, pillars, patios — so hardscape cleaning runs a close second to house washing here, closer than it does anywhere else we work.

Retaining walls, steps and pillars are porous and sit low, so they stay damp. Moss finds hardscape before it finds anything else on the property, and it settles hardest on flat cap stones.
Whichever elevation never gets direct sun is still wet long after the rest of the house has dried, and that is where algae takes hold. If one side has it, the others are on the same road, just further back.
Water gets into stone and mortar and expands all winter. Every cycle opens it up a little more, which gives the next season's growth somewhere better to sit.
Growth arrives evenly and slowly, so the owner stops seeing it. What people notice is the comparison — their wall against a neighbor who washed last year.
